School Nursing


Providing school health services in our communities

Our public health nurses provide school health services to our school districts with the intent to advance the health, well-being, academic success, and lifelong achievement of the students we serve.

School Health Services

Our school nurses:

  • Serve as health care experts in the school to meet the health needs of the students.
  • Provide health related education to students and staff.
  • Monitor immunizations.
  • Manage communicable disease.
  • Administer medications and perform health care procedures, as well as train non-licensed school personnel to do so if necessary.
  • Develop Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for students with chronic health conditions.
  • Develop Emergency Care Plans (ECPs) for students if necessary to guide the response of unlicensed personnel in a health-related emergency.
  • Provide health screenings that can include vision, hearing, postural, dental, and body mass index.
  • Receive medical orders to guide the health care needed for an individual student as necessary.
  • Coordinate the linkage between the medical home, family, and school.
  • Are involved in Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and the Section 504 Team if health-related barriers to learning are identified.
  • Provide families with referral information along with available community resources to improve access to healthcare.
